Can AI Build My Small Business Website?

Short answer: AI tools can build a decent first draft of a website in minutes. Most still need a designer's help to look custom, work well on phones, read clearly and get found on Google. Many business owners start with AI and hire a designer to finish the job.

I see a lot of these sites now. Some are genuinely good starts. Most stall somewhere between "almost there" and "I'm a little embarrassed to send this to people."

What AI builders do well

Credit where it's due. AI website tools are fast, and speed matters when you're starting out. In an afternoon you can have:

  • A layout with sections in a sensible order

  • Placeholder copy that gives you something to react to

  • A color scheme and font pairing that don't clash

  • A site that's technically live

For a side project or a brand-new idea, that might be all you need for a while.

Where they fall short

The trouble shows up when real clients start looking.

It looks like everyone else's. AI builds from patterns, so your site ends up looking like the average of a thousand others in your industry. That's the opposite of what a brand is supposed to do.

The copy sounds like no one. Generated text tends to be polite, vague and long. Visitors skim it and leave without learning what makes you different or what you charge.

Phones get the leftovers. Most of your visitors are on a phone. AI layouts often look fine on a laptop and fall apart on a small screen, with overlapping text, giant images and buttons you can't tap.

Google can't tell what you do. Page titles, descriptions, headings, image alt text and local signals usually get skipped. The site exists, but nobody finds it.

How to tell your site needs help

A few honest questions:

  • Would you send the link to your best client without apologizing first?

  • Does it look right on your phone, page by page?

  • Could a stranger tell what you do, who it's for and how to hire you in ten seconds?

  • Does it show up when you search your business name plus your city?

  • Have you been "almost done" for more than a month?

If you hesitated on two or more, the draft did its job. Now it needs finishing.

Finishing what you started

That's exactly why I built Finish Your Site. You keep the work you've done. I review what you have, polish up to five pages so they look custom, fix the mobile layout, set up SEO basics and launch it. It starts at $1,500 and takes about two weeks.

If you'd rather start fresh, a custom Squarespace website starts at $5,000. Either way, you get a site you're proud to send out.

Send me the link and I'll tell you which one makes sense.
